On Heimdal’s 10th Birthday, we want to thank everyone who shaped our journey from 2014 to today, and the future. Ours is a story of perseverance, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of excellence through community empowerment.

What better way to celebrate than by sharing that story with you?

In 2011, Heimdal®’s Nopsled Team rocked the CTF championship with a groundbreaking idea in DNS security, sparking Heimdal’s incredible journey. The team won first place with its detection and defense algorithm based on the NOP ramp argument.

Nopsled group’s slightly altered code is the foundation of future Heimdal software.

It’s a good feeling, taking on the industry giants and winning. Heimdal Security has come a long way since a few hackers set up a company after winning the 2011 Defcon CTF hacking championship; now it is toppling the likes of Malwarebytes and Symantec! If Heimdal Security was not on the radar for these computer security Titans before, it certainly will be now!

Over the years, we kept getting better. For the better part of our journey we spent countless R&D hours fine-tuning our DNS-level threat filtering, driven by the growing need for world-class cybersecurity.

In 2014, our idea becomes a full-fledged product, marking the first steps of our journey from traditional, endpoint-centric security all-encompassing cyber-protection.

As Heimdal®’s market presence grew, we were recruited by the FBI for Operation Tovar against Zeus ransomware, earning accolades from, Europol, and the Department of Justice.

Invaluable technical assistance was provided by Dell SecureWorks and CrowdStrike. Numerous other companies also provided assistance, including facilitating efforts by victims to remediate the damage to their computers inflicted by GameOver Zeus. These companies include Microsoft Corporation, Abuse.ch, Afilias, F-Secure, Level 3 Communications, McAfee, Neustar, Shadowserver, Anubis Networks, Symantec, Heimdal Security, Sophos, and Trend Micro.

Operation Tovar is an international alliance, it banded together law enforcement agencies, security firms, and researchers against the Gameover ZeuS botnet and the CryptoLocker ransomware.

The mission showcased Heimdal’s key values: helping organizations stay safe and listening to the community.

2016 – Heimdal® involved in No More Ransomware Initiative.

By 2016, we took our products to the street, ensuring our commitment to educate and protect the home user from the most advanced threats.

During the same year, we actively took part in initiatives like No More Ransomware, providing free decryption tools and advice to victims worldwide.

As a team, we strongly believe that a key asset in the fight against ransomware is education. To be aware that this threat exists and to know what you can do to protect your data against it means half the battle is won! The other half is implementing the good (and rather simple) advice that cyber security experts keep insisting on.

Our commitment to education and innovation made a significant impact, protecting users and staying ahead of evolving threats.

The following years saw more recognition, including nominations and awards, solidifying their position as a cybersecurity leader.

XDR is a mandatory choice if you’re interested in ensuring top security for your company, whether you outsource it or opt for something developed internally. The most important aspect is not to go through thousands of alerts from multiple solutions manually but to use a unified state-of-the-art system, with all the necessary technologies in one place.
