The University of Minnesota is currently conducting an investigation into a substantial data breach that could potentially impact a large number of alumni and members of the university community.
Millions Potentially Exposed
The breach was brought to light last month when an unauthorized party claimed to have gained access to sensitive data stored within the university’s systems. This alarming revelation has prompted a thorough examination of the university’s security infrastructure.
According to reports, a threat actor claimed to have managed to breach a database associated with the university, containing a staggering seven million Social Security numbers.
The compromised data is said to extend as far back as the late 1980s. University officials have begun addressing the situation promptly by collaborating with cybersecurity experts and ramping up security measures, including enhanced multi-factor authentication capabilities and more frequent monitoring activities.
“While the preliminary assessment indicates that the data in question pertains to the years 2021 and earlier, we are taking this matter very seriously,” stated Jake Ricker, a spokesperson for the University of Minnesota. “Our top priority is ensuring the safety and privacy of all members of our community, and we are committed to providing updates as we gather more relevant information.”
