Almost 90,000 clients’ personal information was compromised in the cyberattack on the prestigious law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft.
The law firm informed its clients on March 30, 2023, that on November 15, 2022, an unauthorized third party acquired remote access to the firm’s computers. According to reports, the threat actors could extract sensitive information from the network, including documents containing the names and Social Security numbers of the company’s clients.
According to the Office of the Maine Attorney General, the current breach was identified on November 16, 2022, and it affected 93,211 people.
Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP (known as Cadwalader) is New York City’s oldest white-shoe law company and one of the oldest legal firms in the US. Cadwalader’s headquarters is in Lower Manhattan. The business had 400 lawyers in 2022.
Identity Theft
There is currently no evidence that the personal information of impacted clients has been leaked or misused by an unauthorized third party, according to the notice.
The practice claims to do targeted web monitoring to guarantee that such behaviors are recognized and addressed as soon as possible. It cautioned that unauthorized access or misuse of personal information would put clients at “greater risk of identity theft or fraud, financial loss, and non-material loss.”, explains Cyber News.

According to the notice, the law firm acted quickly to stop the intrusion after it was discovered and initiated an investigation with the assistance of cybersecurity experts.

The company issued a warning to its customers, urging them to check their online and financial accounts for any signs of unusual activity in light of the incident.
Customers are urged to change their passwords and security questions and contact their banking institutions immediately upon discovering any suspicious activity. The law office also emphasizes the urgency of reporting any instances of fraud or identity theft to the proper authorities.
The impacted customers have been offered free identity theft protection, which the company strongly recommends they take advantage of.
