Heimdal did not start as a traditional cybersecurity company. It started with two Danish cybersecurity researchers, a piece of innovative technology and a challenge. Could they create something that could identify vulnerabilities, intercept malicious activity and help protect machines before threats could take hold?
That technology went on to compete at the Defcon CTF world hacking championship in 2011, where the team defeated representatives from organisations including the FBI and NSA, bringing home the winning title.
For us, that moment was more than a competition result. It was proof that the approach we had built – focusing on anticipating threats rather than simply reacting to them could stand up against the best in the world. That conviction never left us and that journey has shaped everything Heimdal has become today.
Turning innovation into real-world protection
Cybersecurity cannot be reactive. It has to be about prevention, visibility and staying one step ahead. When Heimdal entered the market, the cybersecurity landscape looked very different. Traditional antivirus solutions dominated and organisations were largely focused on protecting against known threats.
But the world changes quickly and the rise of ransomware, cloud adoption, remote working and complex IT environments have transformed the challenges organisations face. And now, AI driven threats are raising the stakes further. As the challenges evolved, we knew the approach to cybersecurity had to evolve too.
From endpoint solution to unified platform
When many partners first discovered Heimdal, they knew us primarily for our DNS security capabilities – a solution that addressed a very real need, helping organisations block threats before they could reach their networks.
But cybersecurity challenges don’t remain static, and neither can the security solutions that address them. Over time, we saw organisations and partners facing new challenges. Increased tool sprawl, growing complexity and not enough visibility across their security environments.
The answer was not adding more solutions to an already crowded stack. The answer was integration.
Today, Heimdal brings together a full spectrum of protection that organisations need, from endpoint security and patch management to email security, threat hunting and full XDR functionality, all withing a single, integrated platform. The goal has always remained the same, making advanced cybersecurity simpler, more effective and accessible.
The changing role of MSPs
One of the biggest changes I have seen over the last decade has been the evolution of the MSP market. Ten years ago, many organisations were still managing much of their technology themselves. Today, the complexity of the market means it’s crucial for businesses to work with trusted partners who can help guide them.
MSPs are now the frontline of cybersecurity, helping organisations navigate growing threats, increasing compliance requirements and the ever-growing complexity of managing security at scale. Our roadmap has been shaped not only by our own research and development, but by working closely with MSPs who understand the challenges their customers face
The future of cybersecurity is about creating smarter, more integrated approaches, and partners are at the centre of that.
Growing together with Brigantia
Heimdal’s partnership with Brigantia has been an important part of our journey. Since partnering in 2016, we have built far more than a traditional vendor and distributor relationship. In the early days, the UK market was a new environment for us, with its own channel dynamics, expectations and own way of doing business.
Brigantia helped us navigate that, opening doors and providing an honest, grounded perspective. That foundation changed everything and our growth speaks for itself. Today, more than 600 channel partners have Heimdal as part of their security stack, all built through the ecosystem we have developed together with Brigantia over the past ten years.
I believe what makes this partnership work, is a shared belief that technology alone is never enough. The right technology needs the right people, expertise and community around it. Brigantia has always understood that, and their commitment to the channel. The genuine support for partners rather than simply moving products, mirrors our own values, and that alignment is why this partnership has endured and grown.
The next era of cybersecurity
Two things that come to mind when I think about where the industry is heading and they are compliance and AI.
On compliance, the conversation has fundamentally shifted. NIS2 and DORA are already reshaping how organisations across Europe think about their security responsibilities. What organisations are discovering is that having good security is no longer enough on its own. They need to be able to prove it, clearly and consistently and this changes what a cybersecurity platform needs to do.
When it comes to AI, the threat side is moving faster than most organisations realise. We are already seeing AI used to craft phishing campaigns that bypass traditional detection, finding vulnerabilities at speed and automating attacks that would have previously required significant expertise.
The days of a human analyst manually triaging every alert are numbered and the question is whether your security tools are ready for that.
At Heimdal, we’ve already launched the AI Wingman to offer companies AI-powered cybersecurity assistance. As part of our Unified Security Platform, the AI Wingman brings agentic AI assistance closer to the controls, telemetry, and actions that security and IT teams already use.
The next chapter for Heimdal
Years ago, two researchers wanted to know if they could build something that could genuinely out-think an attacker and that question still drives us today.
What has changed is the scale of the answer, we are no longer building for a single threat vector or a single type of customer. The ambition now is for a platform that gives any organisation, regardless of their size or complexity, the visibility and control they need to stay ahead.
I am proud of what the last decade has produced, but honestly, the version of Heimdal I am most excited about is what’s ahead.
To everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you. The next ten years will be built on that foundation.
Here’s to what comes next.
