Sports goods maker Intersport has been hit by the notorious ransomware group Hive, which leaked records of its customers’ personal data, as per French-language media outlet Numerama. The breach allegedly happened in November, with details made available only on the dark web.

What Information Leaked?

Passports, paystubs, and other details on Intersport customers are included in a sample file that Numerama claims Hive leaked on the dark web. It’s standard procedure for ransomware gangs to lock or encrypt all data obtained through a data breach before threatening to post the information online if their money demands are not satisfied.

According to Cybernews, Intersport customers in the northern Hauts-de-France region looked to be the main victims, according to stores identified in the leaked files, but also other regions, such as the center Île-de-France, had also been affected. According to the company’s own statistics, there are more than 700 locations.

Same-Day Ransom Demanded

According to the reports, Intersport was handed a same-day deadline to pay an undisclosed amount but added, “it is possible that the gang is giving the company a little more time to pay, or that negotiations are underway”.

The notorious RaaS (Ransomware-as-a-Service) group Hive, which is linked to Russia, is widely regarded as having infiltrated more than 1,300 businesses over the course of its nefarious criminal career.
