UK’s leading mail service, the Royal Mail, has stopped its international shipping services due to “severe service disruption”. The company described the cause as a “cyber incident”.

Although the event had no effect on delivery or pickup services in the UK, the company encouraged consumers to postpone export orders while the problems were fixed because they could not be sent to foreign countries.

BleepingComputer reached out to Royal Mail to find out more details about the cyberattack. A spokesperson of the mailing service told them that the incident was detected yesterday and that UK/domestic mail remained unaffected following the attack.

In a separate statement, Royal Mail informed the persons using their services that items which have already been delivered might be subject to delays. The company’s Parcelforce Worldwide services have also not been affected.

Our import operations continue to perform a full service, with some minor delays. Parcelforce Worldwide export services are still operating to all international destinations though customers should expect delays of one to two days.

Royal Mail reported the “cyber incident” to UK security agencies and hired outside experts to help them with the ongoing investigation.

A spokesperson of the UK National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) declared that they have been informed of the incident and are working with Royal Mail, alongside the National Crime Agency, to fully understand the impact.

We immediately launched an investigation into the incident and we are working with external experts. We have reported the incident to our regulators and the relevant security authorities.

It isn’t the first time in recent memory that Royal Mail has experienced issues. In November, an outage led to the company’s tracking services being unavailable for more than 24 hours.

The Click and Drop website of the British postal service company was also suspended in November after a data breach exposed customers’ information to attackers.
