Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) recently disclosed the full extent of a data breach from earlier this year, affecting more than 105,000 individuals. The breach, initially attributed to the Medusa ransomware group, compromised a wide range of personal information.
The Breach and Investigation
The incident, which began on February 6, 2023, and lasted until at least February 18, went undetected until MPS identified suspicious activity within its computer network. Law enforcement was promptly notified, and an investigation was launched to assess the extent of the breach.
In a statement released on September 5, 2023, MPS confirmed that the unauthorized party had gained access to sensitive information, such as names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account numbers, state student numbers, medical and health records, and health insurance information.
Ongoing Cybersecurity Challenges
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by educational institutions nationwide, as ransomware groups continue to target vulnerable systems. Recent victims include school districts in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Notably, another set of schools in Rochester, Minnesota, experienced a cyberattack shortly after the Minneapolis incident.
Support for Victims
Upon completing its investigation, MPS began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
MPS is taking proactive measures to assist those affected by providing 24 months of credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services.
