The Iranian Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) confirms that one of the email servers of its subsidiaries was hacked after the “Black Reward” hacking group published online the stolen data.

AEOI declared in an official statement that an unauthorized party stole emails consisting of daily correspondence and technical memos. The agency informed all concerned parties and officials and took the necessary prevention measures to mitigate the incident.

The Leak Addressed

In an official statement issued on its website, the agency claims that the attack had been “carried out by desperation” to attract the attention of the public and media outlets, and lacks any other value.

Black Reward, the group responsible for the hack, posted a 27GB 14-part collection of RAR archives on their Telegram channel. The archives are set to contain 85,000 email messages.

As reported by BleepingComputer, the leaked data is also allegedly said to contain passports and visas of Iranian and Russians working with the agency, performance results, contracts, technical reports and power plant status. The threat actors ended their message with an oblation to Mehsa Amini, the young girl who died in the custody of Iran’s moral police force. The statement from the hackers is inscribed with the words “For women, life, freedom,” which gives the email server hack and data leak action the feel of hacktivism.

The case of Mehsa Amini pushed the people of Iran into a month-long uprising against the country’s regime.

Following this, the Atomic Energy Production and Development Company’s IT unit, based on the anticipated arrangements and in the shortest possible time, while taking necessary and preventive measures, examined the issue from different dimensions and presented its initial report to AEOI officials.
