Ivan Geshev, Bulgaria’s chief public prosecutor, claimed on Twitter that government facilities had been subjected to a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack over the weekend and suggested that Russia may be to blame.
State institutions are under attack, possibly by Russian hacking groups. The prosecutor’s office, together with the security services, will protect the Bulgarian national interest and that of our European partners from malicious influence.

Details Regarding the Attack
According to Euractiv, the DDoS attack targeted Bulgaria’s ministries of Justice, Defense, and Internal affairs. Luckily, it is not thought that the attack caused serious damage to the sites the threat actors were targeting, hampering access rather than destroying or defacing content. Geshev declared that the object of the attack is the entire Bulgarian state as part of the European family and that the attack is being classed by Bulgaria as a criminal case.
Deputy Chief Prosecutor and Director of the National Investigation Service Borislav Sarafov said that the cyberattack originated from the Russian city of Magnitogorsk, located near the border with Kazakhstan. According to Safarov, his research had not revealed whether the DDoS attack was the result of a lone hacker or a more organized gang. He also did not completely rule out the possibility that it was a hoax, though he thought that was improbable.
Whether it is an initiative of some persons or of state structures, I cannot commit [to saying] at this moment, because it is also a matter of investigative secrecy,
Borislav Sarafov, Deputy Chief Prosecutor and Director of the National Investigation Service of Bulgaria
As per Cybernews, the government of Bulgaria maintains that the cyberattack has been stopped and that the nation’s cyber defense forces are on high alert in case there are any additional attempts to undermine digital security. DDoS attacks have become stronger in recent years, and more institutions have been victims of such attacks as of lately.
