International retailer METRO has confirmed a recent cyberattack that causing infrastructure outages and store payment issues. With more than 95,000 employees in 681 stores worldwide, Metro wholesales stores have been struggling with massive IT problems in what could turn out to be a ransomware attack.
An investigation was initiated by the company’s IT team in collaboration with external experts and the early results of the analysis confirmed a cyberattack on the METRO systems as the cause of the IT infrastructure outage. METRO AG claims it has notified all relevant authorities about the incident and will cooperate with them.
What began as a simple suspicion earlier this month has been confirmed to be a cyberattack, but no technical details have been provided by the company.
As BleepingComputer reports, Metro stores are still operating, but the payment systems were set up offline and online orders are delayed indefinitely.
While METRO stores are operating, and services are regularly available disruptions and delays may occur. Online orders through the web app and online store are being processed but delays need to be expected, as well.
Specifically, stock or prices cannot be updated or checked in the store, the checkout system is barely working resulting in long lines, no invoices or daily passes could be issued, and online orders had also disappeared.
Not an Isolated Incident
Retail companies are not immune to cyberattacks, but rather represent one of the hacker-favorite targets when it comes to ransomware. Recently, the US convenience store chain 7-Eleven had to shut down in Denmark after a cyberattack disabled checkout and payment systems all over the country. Just as in Metro`s case, there were no further details related to the threat actors involved or if the company was another victim of the ransomware wave that has caused outages worldwide.
