Threat actors breached Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare`s (TMH) security system last Thursday.

As a result, the whole IT system had to be taken offline and thoroughly checked, while non-emergency procedures were suspended. All patients requiring emergency services were taken to other hospitals, with only Level 1 traumas from TMH`s immediate service area being accepted. According to the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare`s spokesperson:

Our IT Department detected this security issue early and proactively shut down our IT systems to limit the impact.

We are reviewing each of our IT systems now, prioritizing them and bringing them back online one-by-one. We do not currently have a timeline for how long this will take as this is an emerging situation, but we will continue to provide updates.

After being discovered, the attack was immediately reported to law enforcement and the TMH`s IT team is currently working with the authorities on the investigation. In order to mitigate the impact of the cyberattack, the employees followed the existing protocols for system downtime.

The hospital announced that starting today, February 6th, their TMH Physician Partners practices are back to seeing patients as scheduled.

TMH Could Be the Second Hospital Hit by Ransomware This Year

Inside information from sources with knowledge of the situation claims the hospital was targeted by a ransomware attack, according to Bleepingcomputer.

The federal authorities issued warnings about ransomware groups that were actively targeting healthcare companies all around the United States last year.

According to cyber researchers:

This is the second suspected ransomware incident involving U.S. hospitals in 2023. Last year, there were 25 attacks against health systems operating 290 hospitals

The Atlantic General Hospital in Maryland was also target to a ransomware attack last month, on January 30th, as noted by local press.
