The users of the messaging app started reporting the issue on social media, with the subject trending on Twitter in a matter of minutes. The app is used to send over 100 billion messages a day, a figure which is unrivaled in the industry.

According to the service status website Down Detector, more than 12,000 reports were posted by within half an hour.
The outage is one of the most widespread and long-lasting for WhatsApp, a service that has over 2 billion users online. WhatsApp has acknowledged the situation and a representative of its parent company, Meta, which also owns companies such as Facebook, Instagram and Oculus, took to Twitter to address the problem.
