The American news outlet New York Post confirmed today that it was hacked after threat actors used their website and Twitter account to publish offensive headlines and tweets directed at U.S. politicians.
What Happened?
New York Post took to Twitter to make the announcement about the hack after it deleted all the offensive tweets targeted at politicians. The offensive headlines and tweets referred to NYC Mayor Eric Adams, D-NY Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, NY Governor Kathy Hochul, R-IL Representative Adam Kinzinger, Texas Governor Gregg Abbot, and even the U.S. president Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
There is no current information on how the attackers took control of the New York Post’s Twitter and website. The daily newspaper opened an investigation to determine the cause and identify the responsible threat actors.
This year News Corp, the American media and publishing enterprise that owns New York Post, disclosed in February that it has been the victim of a cyberattack targeting journalists working for big news enterprises.
The threat actors managed to gain access to journalists’ email accounts and various other documents such as article drafts. Luckily, customer data were not impacted in that case and the data leakage was avoided.
After they conducted an investigation alongside cybersecurity firm Mandiant, researchers found out that behind the attack were China-backed hackers engaged in espionage activities.
